My holiday in Sicily (1999)

Page Description

Here are some photos taken during my 3 day holiday in September 1999 at Catania and Taormina, two cities in Sicily / Italy. Catania is more famous for its shopping centre and markets which sells almost everything at very good prices, for example the large centre market. Catania also has many large historical buildings, several museums and parks. Food is also one of the strong points of Catania, it was so delicious and relatively not expensive. The confectionery and sweet pies are really a delight here.

Taormina, then, is more touristic, beautiful, nature-full, relaxing and peaceful. It is quite small and you can walk all around in one day. Since Taormina is situated very high up, like on a small mountain, there are so spectacular panoramic views. The climate in general was wonderful in September, warm, sunny, but sometimes dry especially in Catania.

This is a very large, well kept yet old door leading to one of the stone chapels in Taormina. Some one is trying to pick open the lock and enter in!

A wonderful picture painted at a wall under a small tunnel. We were told that the shiny metal was gold but I doubt it since I wonder how it is possible that no poor fellow ever tried to rip and steal some.

A joyful band playing loudly along the narrow streets of Taormina. They really filled the atmosphere with good music.

Many activities goes on in Taormina, such as this portrait hand painting. The painter did an excellent job here!

This is maybe the main attracting structure of Taormina - the old colesseum-like theatre. It is partially destroyed, but still much of it is left intact. I forgot historical details about this coliseum, but it is very old and had Greek design, which was quite uncommon for Roman dominated places like Italy. It is used nowadays as a 'platform' for festivals especially a main festival in Summer.

This is a terrace which gives panoramic views of all around Taormina, especially the beaches and bays of nearby villages.

Another marvellous view from the high altitude Taormina. In this mountainous place you would like to have wings and fly away. The fact that the city is in a high place, you feel that you are in the sky. Here are some wonderful shores under Taormina. I think it was called Massaro here.

This was also a very beautiful view showing all the seashore of eastern coast of Sicily. If your eyes can see for many hundreds of km, you could make all the eastshore of Italy since here we are facing North / North-East
