Along the main street of Taormina there is an arch and
there is this mosaic masterpiece depiction. On looking
the picture closer (click for the enlarged image) one can
note that this is made up of small squarish pieces of coloured

Another small church with a large square/terrace in front.
This is St. Augustine's Church, today used as town library,
was built at the end of the fifteenth century by the taorminesi
for devotion to St. Sebastian, who, according to the legend,
miraculously saved the town from the plague. With the arrival
in Taormina of the Augustinian monks, who widened it into
a convent, the little church lost the ancient name tied
to St. Sebastian to engage the new one connected to St.
Augustine.
The wooden roof is made with trusses. Each side is decorated
by four niches with false arcs and columns in Corinthian
style.
Originally the church was in late gothic Sicilian style,
but it suffered radical transformations around the eighteenth
century, when the lancet arc of the main portal was replaced
by a lintel in stone from Taormina.
Of the ancient front we can up to now observe the little
rose window and the upper extremity of the ancient portal
with the lancet arc.

The fortitude Cathedral, as it was defined, was built
around 1400 onto the ruins of a little medieval church
dedicated to St. Nicola from Bari.
It has a structure at latin cross with three aisles.
The six small altars find place in the two side aisles.
Six columns, three for side, of monolithic origin in
pink marble from Taormina and surmounted by decorated
capitals in leaf and scale of fish, support the central
aisle. This one opens under a ceiling with beams of
wood and carved shelves, which reproduce Arabian motives
made in Gothic style.
Of notable interest the principal portal, restructured
in 1636, with a big carved rose window inspired to the
Renaissance.
