Full repair description and observations |

First I changed all the
belts present. There was one for the FF/REW/Play and another one for the
counter. I thought that this was all required, but altghough Counter and
FF/REW were fixed the playback was still bad. There were no more belts to
change! |

I examined carefully the
mechanism, and soon noted that the idler reel was not making contact with the
tape pickup reel. The idler tyre around was missing (late found half of it in
the case interior. |

A similar tyre could not
be found in the 3 electronics shops, so then I decided to make one myself. I
found some suitable O-Rings which would fit in the idler gap very well, but
it still did not made good contact! First I tried to solve this by making a
flat belt around the pick up reel so that there will be contact, but this
prooved to be an ineffective + very difficult manuvre. |

Then I removed again the
0-Ring. This was not suitable for the job also becsue it is made of plastic
and it just slips with the pickup reel. A rubber tyre was needed here. I had
some tyres but were larger. So I tried to cut one
and glue it inside the tyre gap with evostick. I cut the exact length of
rubber tyre and placed it around the idler. I used a clamp to keep the tyre
in place while the glue dried to bond. |

Next day the tyre seamed
to be in good shape. I placed it back in the mechanism and it was doing it
job fine – there was good contact and the pick up reel was spinning. I closed
everything back and the playback came working perfectly. |

This repair job was very
nasty because to dismantle the cassette compartment to arrive to the idler
tyre was a very big headache. Many parts needed to be dismantled before. But
well it was a challenging job and was very glad that I fixed this radio for
the mother of the owner. |

I would have saved much
time and hassle if I drawn / marked how some mechanical parts were in place
or at least taken a digital photo. |
