PHOTO GALLERY:
My holiday in Sicily (1999)

Page Description

Here are some photos taken during my 3 day holiday in September 1999 at Catania and Taormina, two cities in Sicily / Italy. Catania is more famous for its shopping centre and markets which sells almost everything at very good prices, for example the large centre market. Catania also has many large historical buildings, several museums and parks. Food is also one of the strong points of Catania, it was so delicious and relatively not expensive. The confectionery and sweet pies are really a delight here.

Taormina, then, is more touristic, beautiful, nature-full, relaxing and peaceful. It is quite small and you can walk all around in one day. Since Taormina is situated very high up, like on a small mountain, there are so spectacular panoramic views. The climate in general was wonderful in September, warm, sunny, but sometimes dry especially in Catania.

This was a famous church which later it was found that there is underlying catacombs. In our 3 day stay we did not pay much attention to historical sites, but if I come again here I will surely do it becasue i believe Catania as most Sicily has very interesting history.

- Catania has many large squares full of people walking, reading newspaper, chatting or just hanging around maybe they meet someone. Also free live concerts by in-famous bands was very common in such squares.

Building here is mostly made of concrete/bricks/ and it was enormous and well decorated. One problem here, is that Catania is continually rained with ashes from the nearby Volcano of Mount Etna and so most building gets black and looks 'dirty'

This was a large park dedicated to a famous music composer born in Catania - Bellini. This garden was well kept and for instance here is a month and day calendar made of grass (top central part reads "17 Settembre 1999") and also a clock which is made of living grass.

Again a photo of this famous garden in Catania, where it's name is largely written by grass, hence "Giardino Bellini"

This is the most famous thing of Catania for Maltese people - the large market place. Many Maltese just go to Catania (about 100 Euros trip) and buy many many things from the market since items are so much cheap here. The money saved by buying from this cheap market will surely cover the trip costs!

Now we move to Taormina and here is a photo on the way to Taormina with the bus. We stayed one day in Taormina and it was a very beautiful experience. It is an old village situated on a high mountain-like land.

This is the main door to enter the small village of Taormina. as you can note from the traffic sign, no cars are allowed here and so it makes it much more beautiful to walk around the village with no cars around!

Here is a photo in the main street of Taormina. Plenty of shops, restaurants, small hotels and plenty of people mostly tourists. It is very touristic place in Summer and there are lots of attractive activities going on.
