SANGORG04-11 : Feast of Saint George, Qormi (Jun/04) |

This is a huge crystal chandelier. There are two of them at each side of the main altar. i think this church has the largest chandeliers of all churches in Malta. I was told that before the feast, people would climb up on ladders and clean the chandelier crystals one by one with a cloth. Definitely Not my type of job !!!

This church, like other old parish churches have a number of large statues. This particular one is saint Joseph. I am beside the statue to have an idea about its size in case you thought that it is was some matchbox size :-)

Finally this is the title statue of Saint George, hence to whom the feast is dedicated. For this occasion he is put out from his niche. On Sunday, teh actual feast day, the statue is carried along the main streets of the town by several people on their shoulders. There will be a a procession which takes about 3 hours.

A very important part of a feast is the fireworks display. There are two types, the sky and the ground fireworks. The sky fireworks are furthermore divided into 2 types, that is the night colourful fireworks, and the 'daylight' explosive shells. The latter are demonstrated in the photo and they are not based on colourful elegance, but briefly on the timing, technique and sound of the shells. You would not see anything spectacular, but when you become more involved in fireworks, you start liking these more and more.

This is a a photo of several shells being fired one after each other rapidly. The exploding shells are higher up, (not shown in the photo) but I also like to watch this part where they are fired into the sky, like automatic cannons.

Finally here starts some photos of the colourful sky fireworks which are displayed at night. The climax for the display of fireworks is on the eve of the feast, that is usually Saturday. In this feast the display started at 21:45 and ended at 23:30. Here I show several examples of these spectacular fireworks
