MarZ Kreations Photo Gallery (by Stephen Mifsud)

Bratislava, 1 day visit to the Capital City of Slovakia (June 2006)

This photogallery consists of many photos from a 1 day visit to the capital city of Slovakia, called Bratislava, during my and my wife holiday in Budapest together with my friend Etienne and his girlfriend Analise.

As many central and Eastern Europe cities, Bratislava consists of the central old town surrounded by more modern apartments, shops, street and flats. The old town of Bratislava is of course the most popular site with tourists. One of the good news was that no vehicles are allowed in old town, so it feels less chaotic than Budapest. Another good news for us was that the town is rather small and most of it can be seen (quickly!) during our 1 day stay. The bad news was that in the afternoon it started to rain, and not well prepared for that we had to leave back earlier than planned, and so did not made it to visit the castle. However, from the photos seen in this gallery, we had seen quite a lot.

Visitor hits from 10-Jun-06:

BratislavaPhoto_5064 * Photo of the Trinity Church. This very old church sits just outside of the entrance to the Old Town section of Bratislava. Founded in the late 1600's by the Trinitarian Order this church is kind of a bizarre pinkish/orange color on the outside. We were unable to go inside the day we were here but we did look in the windows. The inside was much more attractive and we wished that we would have been able to have gone inside.

BratislavaPhoto_5070 * In the 9th century a larged walled settlement of the Great Moravian Empire, later on a fortified stronghold with basilica and a palace stood there. In the 15th century, the Castle was reconstructed into a magnificient Gothic well fortified residence. In 16th century, an extensive Renessaince reconstruction of the castle palace into a royal residence took place. Since 1608 the king?s crown was deposited on the castle. In the 17th century, the Castle was extended and it reached its today?s appearance. In the second half of the 18the century, the sovereign Maria Theresa initiated a grandiose reconstruction. The Castle was changed into a luxurious royal residence. Joseph II converted the Castle into a general seminary and former royal residence was changed into a military barracs. By the carelessness of the soldiers the Castle in 1811 burnt down. From that time until its reconstuction in the period 1954-1968 it was in bad repair. The building now houses a museum. * 799 x 599 * (179KB)
BratislavaPhoto_5074 * The Order of St Clare settled in Bratislava in 1297 and constructed a church and a monastery of their own. The single-nave church, built in Gothic style, is from the first half of the 14th century. In about 1400, a remarkable pentagonal spire with sculptures was annexed. Only its pyramid-shape top is built in neo-Gothic style and comes from the 19th century. As the spire seems to hang in the space, being fixed to a special support, there are a number of legends about it. The Monastery was constructed after the Greta fire in 1590, in the late Renaissance style (1636-1640), commissioned by Archbishop Peter Pazmany and Imrich Losy. Since the second half of the 18th century until 1908, this building was used as the seat of the Academy of Law and the Catholic Seminary. The composer Bela Bartok and the Slovak inventor Jozef Murgas were among its prominent students. At present, the church is used as a place of exhibitions and concerts. The monastery building houses the Information and Documentation Center of the Council of Europe.
