Remarks :

This species was first discovered by Edwin Lanfranco at the University campus in the late 1990s, where it had escaped from cultivation on the premises. Later, in April 2020, it was observed growing along at Wied Għollieqa, located close to the University Campus. It appears to be a casual alien that can self-propagate but cannot disperse over long distances unless introduced by human activity, such as the dumping of plants or contaminated soil. The old records of Epilobium roseum in gardens from the villages of Lija and Attard by Borg (1927) might correspond to Oenothera rosea, because E. roseum grows in wetland habitats, unlike O. rosea, which is expected in artificial habitats. Tavilla & Lanfranco reconfirm the population of Wied Għollieqa and find another plant growing at Argotti Gardens in 2024. Photos on the page were taken from the University Campus on 16-May-2015, an area that has now been demolished. This plant is usually a perennial, but in the warm and arid climate of Malta is can have an annual life cycle.

Description, Habitat and Distribution
Botanical Description This plant is a perennial that flowers in its first year. It has several thin, upright or slightly leaning stems that come from a somewhat woody base. The stems can be simple or branched and usually grow between 10 and 50 cm tall, but sometimes it grows more like a shrub up to about 1 meter tall. The whole plant is a bit hairy, especially on the lower stems.

The leaves aren’t packed too closely together. The ones at the base are shaped kind of like a narrow upside-down spoon, about 2 to 5 cm long, with smooth or slightly toothed edges, and they have thin little stalks 1 to 2 cm long. The leaves higher up the stem get smaller and more oval-shaped, around 1.5 to 3 cm long. The very top leaves are smaller and act like bracts, and that’s where the flowers grow in thin clusters.

The flower tube is slender, about 4 to 8 mm long, with tiny hairs on the outside and a bit fuzzy inside. The sepals are 5 to 8 mm long with free tips about 1 mm, and they often stick together when the flower is open. The petals are rose to reddish-purple, broad and about 5 to 10 mm long. The stamens are almost as long as the petals, with thin filaments 4 to 6 mm long and anthers 2.5 to 4 mm long. The seed capsule is egg-shaped, about 8 to 10 mm long and 3 to 4 mm wide, with four slightly winged edges. The base of the capsule extends into a hollow, ribbed part that’s 5 to 20 mm long. The seeds are brown, asymmetrical, and about 0.6 mm long.
