Repair notes

Full repair description and observations

1

On inspecting the cassette housing (CH) 2 small gears were partially broken (about 2 teeth each). Neither Map, nor G&E, nor Aplan (JVC agent) had these parts, but the latter ordered them for me from abroad.

2

The VCR service manual was obtained from mauritron.com (from UK) and printed up. The model was perfectly equivalent with the JVC HDR-110EK VCR and it seems that it was identical in all respects. This manual about 120 pages and was very helpful.

3

With the partially broken gears removed, the CH was still jammed, and it was obvious that there was something else wrong. The CH gears and parts were all removed and re-assembled from scratch. They were badly mounted. It took several hours and patience for this job. Note that many gears have a very small notch at one teeth, which indicates that it should be aligned with the notch of the adjacent gear. Although it may seem irrelevant, it was of extreme importance.

4

Once everything was assembled up, the CH was working and  moving fine, except with some jerked movement, and occasional jamming due to the obvious broken gears. The CH was further tested by applying 6 - 12V dc on the small motor in the CH responsible for ejecting and loading the tray of the CH.

5

I ordered again the 2 gears from the internet at Telepart, UK. These arrived within 8 days, while those of Aplan were still on order. (eventually they arrived 30 days after!). The manual was extremely helpful to quote the exact part number.

6

I easily replaced the small gears and the CH came working perfectly.

7

The CH was assembled back in the VCR, taking attention to connect the cables in the right way. The manual was quite helpful again. One of the cables (2 pole) could not be found on the main-board PCB, but then it was found that it has to be joined with another loose wire with the connection socket. (The VCR was not initially dis-mantled by me).

8

The CH worked fine with a little defect that the cassette back cover lever was protruding by 1-2mm more than normal, with the result of preventing or making resistance for the cassette tape to be loaded in. Apparently this was due the fact that with usage, the CH and inside tray became loose and there was no remedy for it. However if the cassette was loaded properly, this was not a problem - pushing the cassette a bit to the right eliminated the problem too.

9

When testing the VCR for full operation, it was noted that the FF and Rew was not working properly, and when ejecting the cassette, the tape remains coiled up in the VCR!

10

This was another fault and is described in another document: Job16b.doc

Repair summary

Broken and misalignment of the cassette housing gears

Precautions, fouls and advises

1

All gears and mechanical moving parts are aligned, and must be assembled in the original factory position. Sometimes this is a trial and error job, especially if without service manual, however, most of the time there is a tiny indication, such as a notch, hole, etc showing how the parts should be assembled in place.
