These stone niches are very common in old towns of Malta. This particular one is found in the cathedral of Malta, at Citadel, Gozo. Smaller ones are commonly found in street corners or walls.

MALTESE TOWNS & HOUSES Photos from the Maltese islands (pic 92) |

This is how a typical town looks like in Malta. This is the town of Victoria in Gozo in September 2002. Almost all houses are built from the Globigerina Limestone, the most common rock found in the Maltese islands.

A nice view of green village - Mtarfa. Mdina lies at the far right corner. Typical green-looking Malta in Winter and Spring, which is a different scenario from the dry Summer months. (Photo taken on Jan 2003).

|
A quite big bridge built by the British colony in the 19th century. Most of mtarfa was built by the British colony during their stay in Malta (1800 - 1974). This is one of their buildings, a bridge which crosses above a valley at the countryside of Mtarfa.

Remainings of some farming tools Photos from the Maltese islands (pic 96) |

A good proof of the saying : "time destroys everything". This particular tool is so badly ruined and eroded that I cannot recognize what originally was. Taken at fields situated in Mtarfa.

VALLETTA HOUSES Photos from the Maltese islands (pic 97) |
|
Here I was invited by my friend Donald to have a look from the very top of one of the two high towers of the church of Saint Paul at Valletta. These towers (called 'kampnari') were being restored for the upcoming feast of Saint Paul on the 10th of February. There was a height of about 30 metres, and was very windy. This is a photo taken over the houses of south east part of Valletta.

AUTOMATIC MUSIC BOX Photos from the Maltese islands (pic 98) |
|
This was a very curious attraction at Valletta main Square. It was a large music box which automatically played music by several instruments controlled by compressed air. Music notes scores in form of large cardboard/wood sheets with pits and holes were fed into the machine which in turn played the corresponding music. Also it was very colourful and beautiful. I was said that these are very common in Holland.

LAFERLA CROSS VIEW 1 Photos from the Maltese islands (pic 99) |
 |
This is a wonderful view from a high hill in Siggiewi called Laferla Cross. As the name states, on top of this hill there is a very large cross. From here you could see most of Malta beneath you. This photo (using wide view lens) shows central and East/South east of Malta, hence towns like Valletta, Hamrun, Qormi, Luqa, Zurrieq, Siggiewi etc

Another photo from the wonderful view visible from Laferla Cross at Siggiewi. This time here is North and Northwest part of Malta, hence towns like Rabat, Mdina, Burmarrad, Saint Paul, etc. Note that here you can view most of the sea surrounding the island!
