PHOTO GALLERY:
One Day in VASA and STOCKHOLM
June 2003

Page Description

This Photogallery consists of a collection of Photos from a one-day visit in the large cities of Vasa; in West of Finland and Stockholm; capital city of Sweden.

It was my first time visit to Vasa (Monday 16th June 03) and I was very pleased and attracted by it. So I have dedicated more photos on Vasa than to Stockholm which I already visited last June 2002.

Vasa contains many large, decorative and colourful painted buildings, an large astonishing church, lots of museums, such as the marine museum, beaches, islands, squares, parks, and also that cute colourful train. In vasa there are lot of universities and colleges and so most of the people are young aged. For instance Malin herself and many of her friends from Bennas came to study in Vasa. There is also good number of restaurants, shops and peaceful places to rest and have an ice cream. Vasa is a beautiful city and I liked it very much.

Some other huge colourful building. Again plenty of windows with a tower-like terrace at the corner, and detailed edges and dark roofs.

Here we are in the marine museum of Vasa. There was lot of interesting things to see such remainings of sunken ships, photos, ship engines, lighthouse parts, ship models, ship tools and items (example old chests) etc. However the most parts I liekd was a map of Vasa marked with spots where ships have been reported to been sunk. additionally there were photos of the ships accordingly. More from 200 ships were reported sunk in Vasa alone. Here is a large model of aRussiann ship. The museum keeper was excellent, she gave us a 30-minute or more lecture about the museum and its things inside.

That spooky black thing is not the "Monster from the deep" but was a very primitive scuba diving suit made of real material from from intestines or stomach of cows or pigs. It was dated 18th century. In fact it still had a funny smell. This was a photo taken by the museum keeper, who I repeat she was very nice and kind. (Come-on give her a promotion!)

This was yet another building which impressed me very much. It is a sort of water tower. I still do not understand well but it seems that it distributes water around the city of Vasa.

Close up of the tower showing detail of the upper part. As you can see there is a collar of grey brickstone structure around the upper portion of the tower. I have the impression that this grey brick structure was imported from some old ruins (example a castle or a bridge) and so used again on this tower. It is really another masterpiece for me.

Further close up of the instruments found at the top of the tower. Mostly communication and weather apparatus.

Some more interesting and attractive building. Inside here it was like a shop complex or maybe we can put it as a 'market place'. From here i bought that 'ravton' jam (Photo: VASA-19).

They say Fins are environment friendly and care for nature. Looking at this incredibly long chimney I find no problem to believe that statement, because the smoke could really never reach the ground from up there. If there is some problem at the chimney, then there is an iron-bract stairs outside the chimney and you can climb up peacefully and calmly to the top and see what's the problem might be. By the way this was a factory and now it is not used anymore.

This building serves as the main court house for Vasa. I think the court is not very much busy for a low criminal place like Vasa !!! In fact there is not even a single person around.
