TAMPERE09-20 : A week in Tampere visiting several attractions and sites (30 July - 7 Aug 2009) |

This is the cathedral of Tampere which definitely one should visit. The Tampere Cathedral (or Tampereen tuomiokirkko in Finnish), was designed by Lars Sonck and built between 1902 and 1907 and is the seat for the Tampere diocese
The cathedral is famous for its frescoes, painted by renowned symbolist Hugo Simberg between 1905 and 1906. The paintings aroused considerable critique in their time[1], featuring versions of Simberg's The Wounded Angel and The Garden of Death. Of particular controversy was Simberg's painting of a winged serpent on a red background in the highest point of the ceiling, which his contemporaries interpreted as a symbol of sin and corruption.
Actually, many paintings and art inside have the theme of death (or perhaps should be interpreted as rise from death), such as a skeleton riding a black horse which reminds me of Lord of the Rings and a vulture depicted on stained glass (images further below)

A nice decorated park close to the cathedral attracted my attention and merited some photos. All flowers had the theme colours of Pink, Red or silver-grey. Here I remeber Martyn gave us a huge present (at least in a good spot)

Inside the cathedral one could see the main painting behind the altar showing a number of people rising from their tombs. Usually we always see some Saint, The Holy Mary of Jesus so it was quite different.

Tampere by night - full of people and life mostly youths and tourists. There was some special event on beg of August (Tampere day perhaps) and few shops were open at night a number of events going by. We did not know about it and went a bit late but managed to buy some books, see an african dance with fire and dine. Actually, we had a bit of difficulty to find an open air restaurant. Rosso was an option but was full up so we ate there inside - good place, good food, reasonable prices but very busy!
