The Saimaa House includes a handicrafts shop and a cafeteria. It is situated in Linnankatu street, which has played an essential role in the history of the town of Savonlinna and the Olavinlinna castle.
In the 18th century it constituted the town centre of Savonlinna. In the latter half of the 20th century apartment buildings were built along the street originally lined with wooden houses. but the eastern end of the street has remained as a fairly uniform area of wooden houses, bearing witness to the late 19th century residential area.

In front of Olavinlinna, castle of St. Olaf, situated on a rocky island in the river Kyronsalmi in Savonlinna.
Olavinlinna was built in 1475. The Danish-born founder of the castle, knight Erik Axelsson Tott, decided that a powerful fortification should be built to protect the strategically important Savo region. The castle was supposed to repel Russian attacks from the east and to guarantee the control of the Savo region for the Swedish crown.

Close up of a strange construction on the towers. First we did not know what it was, but during the guided tour in the castle we found out that these were the toilets of the castle! So you had to be careful in case you were walking just beneath the towers, in order not to get an unpleasant surprise from above...
